INTRODUCTION

Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation had a great vision for the holistic development of villages in India. Gandhian Vision of Self Sufficient ‘Village Republics’ was based on the use of local resources by using decentralized, eco-friendly technologies so that the basic needs like food, clothing, shelter, sanitization, health care, energy, livelihood, transportation and education are locally met.

Unnat Bharat Abhiyan is one of the Central Government Scheme that functions under the Ministry of Education and aims to connect institutions of higher education with local communities and focuses to take technology towards rural development. The Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (Village Adoption Committee was started in Nirmala College for Women in 2018 and has served towards the rural development in all possible ways.

The following are the Policies, Practices and Outcomes that provides an in-depth explanation about UBA of Nirmala College for Women, Coimbatore.

POLICIES

  • To involve our college as one of the participating Institute that strives towards rural development of our nation.
  • To adopt various villages that would require the help of our institution for its progress and development.
  • To identify the development challenges of the adopted villages with local communities and address it with suitable solutions and technologies involving the Management, Government and Private Sectors.
  • To seek financial assistance from UBA by applying various projects and its implementation in the villages on the themes Organic Farming, Water Management, Renewable Energy, Artisans, Industries and Livelihood and on Basic amenities for the adopted villages.
  • To involve management, faculty and students in serving the villages and instill the spirit of social responsibility, social commitment and develop holistic personality development through rural development.
  • To involve villagers by giving community engagement programmes, generate employment, income and enhance their standard of living through sustainable living.

PRACTICES

  • The Institution makes an earnest effort to understand the available resources of the adopted villages and tries to mobilize it with the local community by addressing its development challenges through appropriate technologies.
  • We undertake various projects and provide awareness programmes on education, entrepreneurship, health and hygiene, youth empowerment, energy conservation, water conservation, digital India, Financial Literacy and so on and fulfill their needs for progress.
  • We try to generate employment for men, women and youth and inculcate the spirit of savings towards their future.
  • The UBA Committee consisting of faculty and students visit the tribal villages and implement our programmes by involving the villagers, private sectors and public sectors towards their steady growth.
  • We organize and participate in seminars, workshops related to the themes and enhance the knowledge of the faculty, students and the villagers pertaining to their development.
  • We try to create assets like construction of toilets, water tanks, vermi compost pits and other requirement with the help of management, sponsors and for their development.

OUTCOMES

By implementing the above mentioned programmes

  • Our Institution will be a part of the UBA of our Government and would share the responsibility of developing our adopted tribal villages that require utmost care and concern and lead to nation’s development.
  • The management, faculty and students would help in transforming the lives and livelihood of all the tribal villagers and improve their standard of living emphasizing sustainable living.
  • The faculty and students would learn the spirit of leadership, team work and would share the responsibility of good citizenship.
  • Implementation of projects and fund generation from UBA and other Government and Non Government agencies would bring an all round progress of the villages.
  • Basic requirements like education, health & Hygiene, employment and other awareness would improve their social and economic development.
