Geography is a synthesizing discipline that straddles both physical and social sciences. The interdisciplinary nature of the subject equips students to pursue a variety of specializations. The broad-based knowledge that this subject imparts and instil confidence in an individual and helps one face competitive examinations.
Geography was introduced at the intermediate level in 1956 and as a degree course in 1976. Our institution being a private sector in Tamil Nadu possesses the pride of offering B.Sc. degree in Geography. The Department of Geography is well recognized for its excellent facilities. The Department has a spacious laboratory and is well equipped with drawing instruments, surveying equipments, thematic maps, topographical maps, aerial photographs, satellite data products, weather maps, hand held GPS units and licensed GIS software. Our department was recognized as a research department in the year of 2012. Since 2017 the department is part of the DBT star college scheme.
The department strives to impart to the students a knowledge and an understanding of planet earth and its people, to create lasting awareness and build a learning community that goes beyond the curriculum, to nurture in students a sense of respect for others and their surroundings and to also foster links with schools and other departments.
The course syllabus covers the fundamental concepts of physical and human geography along with the basics of computers and technology-enabled fields like Remote Sensing and GIS. Under the autonomous syllabus, papers like Information and Communication Technology in Geography, Basics of Remote Sensing, and basics of Geographic Information System have been introduced. The syllabus of the papers is constantly revised with a view of making it relevant and interesting. Field trips also form an integral part of the learning process for the students.
Every year the department networks with local schools in order to strengthen interest in geography. The department conducts symposiums, workshops and exhibitions and a geo quiz for school students. The department has for several years consciously chosen to avoid all disposables and the students of the department have since 2009 made newspaper carry bags and ensured that no plastic carry bags are used in the campus. In 2018 the students reached a land mark free distribution of one lakh newspaper carry bags.
